Radar Detectors: Illegal for Commercial Drivers

Radar detectors are illegal in any commercial motor vehicle over 10,000 lbs. This is a federal regulation under 49 CFR §392.71 and applies nationwide, no matter which state you’re rolling through.

The ban isn’t just on using one; possession alone is a violation. Even a detector that’s unplugged, boxed up, or tossed in a side pocket can lead to fines, inspection violations, and CSA impacts. A radar detector found during a roadside inspection will almost always result in an enforcement action.

Why the strict stance? Commercial vehicles require longer stopping distances and pose greater risks. Speed management is a core part of safe operation, and radar detectors send the wrong message: that a driver intends to “beat the system” rather than maintain safe, legal speeds.

Keep radar detectors out of the truck. If it’s in the cab, it’s a violation. Staying compliant protects you, your load, and our company’s safety record. Stay sharp, stay safe, stay legal.
