How to Prepare for International Roadcheck on May 12-14, 2026

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's annual International Roadcheck will take place from May 12-14. This 72-hour inspection is designed to ensure the safety of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers. During this year's event, inspectors will focus on electronic logging device (ELD) tampering, falsification or manipulation, and on cargo securement.

According to CVSA, last year, falsification of record of duty status was the second most-cited driver violation, at 58,382 violations. Five out of the top 10 driver violations were related to hours of service or ELDs. 18,108 violations were issued for cargo not secured to prevent leaking/spilling/blowing/falling and 16,054 violations for vehicle components or dunnage not being secured.

"For the driver portion of the inspection, inspectors check the driver’s qualifications, license, record of duty status, medical examiner’s certificate, seat belt usage, skill performance evaluation certificate (if applicable), and status in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (in the U.S.). Inspectors will also look for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.

For the vehicle portion of the inspection, they will assess the vehicle’s brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft components, driver’s seat, fuel and exhaust systems, frames, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, wheels, rims, hubs, and windshield wipers."

Eight tips to help you prepare:
  • Review your company’s policies and make sure your Record of Duty Status is complete, accurate, and up to date. Know your HOS limits, take proper breaks, and never falsify logs.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections and ensure that everything is working properly.
  • Ensure your driver records, including commercial driver's license, medical certificate, and hours of service records, are up-to-date.
  • Verify that your cargo is properly secured and within weight limits.
  • Keep vehicle maintenance records up-to-date to ensure that your vehicle is current on inspections.
  • Check for proper inflation, tread depth, and any signs of damage like air leaks, bulges, cuts, or sidewall issues.
  • Check lights, brakes, windshield wipers, coupling devices, suspension, and all safety equipment.
  • Keep all necessary documentation, including permits, registrations, and insurance papers on hand and readily available.

By following these tips and regularly inspecting vehicles, drivers can ensure that their commercial motor vehicles are safe and well-prepared not only for the upcoming International Roadcheck but also for future trips.
