This year's CVSA Operation Safe Driver Week is scheduled for July 13-19, with a focus on reckless, careless or dangerous driving. Law enforcement personnel will be on roadways throughout this time issuing warnings and citations to commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, drunk or drugged driving, etc.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 42,514 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2022. The CVSA states, "Any person who drives a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is driving recklessly. Careless/dangerous driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road."

Here are 7 reckless driving behaviors to avoid, to keep yourself and others safe on the road:

  1. Speeding
  2. Cutting in front of another driver and slowing down
  3. Changing lanes without signaling
  4. Weaving in and out of traffic
  5. Blocking cars attempting to pass or change lanes
  6. Tailgating
  7. Running red lights
